Late Summer Garden Veggies

The weather has been anything but normal. Temperatures have been in the mid to upper 90's for many days now with no rain. The weather has just turned temporarily cooler today. The good soaking rains missed my garden a few days ago, what else is new :-( I continue to water the garden to keep the plants growing. I planted my fall crop seedlings of cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage about one week ago. I put some shade netting over the plot to protect the tender seedlings against the desert heat (see first pic above). I have been having some trouble with flea beetles on these seedlings, so I sprayed a little sevin on them. I also have been having problems with bean beetles on my green beans (see third pic above). I sprayed a little bit of sevin on the beans as well. I do not like using sevin too much since it is pretty toxic to earthworms, but sometimes I have to use a little to control those pesky beetles. My celery is growing pretty good despite the heat and dry conditions (see second pic above). I just need to keep the plants well watered which means that I have to water them at least 2 times a week. My peppers continue to do well (see third pic above) and I started harvesting some nice sized green peppers about one week ago. About three weeks ago I processed about 7 gallons of tomato sauce from my six roma tomato plants. These plants are still producing, but I have decided to stop watering them (see last pic above) as I have all the tomatoes that I need. I did have a few tomatoes with blossom end rot damage, but not many. I have been waiting for the weather to turn somewhat cooler and wetter to plant out my carrot seeds, but it looks like that will not happen anytime soon. I will be planting out my carrots tomorrow. I will have to make sure that they stay well watered. I will probably shade them to keep the soil from drying out.

Happy Gardening!!
