Plant Protection for the Fall Garden

To keep your fall garden growing, some type of protection is needed for most vegetable plants. Polypropylene row covers work really well in both the fall and the spring. Hoop houses also work well with either row covers or clear plastic covers. The major advantage to using polypropylene row covers is that they are breathable and also allow rain in. The clear plastic covers do neither. The clear plastic covers do seem to insulate better, so it is a trade off. I have posted pictures above of these types of plant protections currently in use in my garden.

The weather has really cooled off over the past week. The low temperature a few mornings ago was 30 degrees. All of my warm season plants have been pulled up. I am hopeful to be able to start harvesting cauliflower within the next few days. I continue to harvest lettuce, broccoli, celery, cabbage, and green onions. I will also be harvesting more brussel sprouts soon. Happy Fall Gardening.

Tim, I see you have lovely raised beds with the Square Foot method. Can I ask a question about the grass I see surrounding them? How did you get rid of the grass in the areas you are now gardening? Does grass creep into the raised beds? Do you cultivate the ground with a shovel only, or some kind of tool? I am new to reading your blog, but I am looking to put up similar beds and have bermuda EVERYWHERE! Any solutions would be appreciated!

Edith,

When I first put in those raised beds, I completely removed all of the sod, roots and all, with a shovel. I still do occasionally have to pull up some grass and weeds that come up in the beds. Overall, I do not have much problem with grass encroaching into the beds. In the spring, I go around the non-raised bed plots with a spade and cut out any grass that might be encroaching. I also reset my landscape timbers at that time, as they seem to sink over time. I hope this answered your question.
